Classification of coefficients of variation in experiments with commercial layers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Faria Filho,DE; Dias,AN; Veloso,ALC; Bueno,CFD; Couto,FAP; Matos Júnior,JB; Barreto,KZO; Rodrigues,PA; Carneiro,WA.
This study aimed at determining a specific classification of coefficients of variation in experiments with commercial layers. Coefficients of variation were collected from papers published in Brazilian journals between 2000 and 2009 for performance, internal egg quality, and eggshell quality parameters. The coefficients of variation of each parameter were classified as low, intermediate, high, and very high according to the ratio between the median and the pseudo-sigma. It was concluded that the parameters used in experiments with commercial layers have a specific classification of coefficients of variation, and that this must be considered to evaluate experimental accuracy.

Performance and Egg Quality of Commercial Laying Hens Fed Diets Formulated Using Non-Linear Programming Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Almeida,TW; Silva,AL; Saccomani,AP; Muñoz,JA; Silva,RT; Franca,NV; Faria,DE; Faria Filho,DE.
ABSTRACT Feed formulation using linear programming consists of determining the mixture of feedstuffs required to meet pre-established animal nutritional requirements at the lowest cost. On the other hand, with the use of non-linear programming, it is possible to define nutritional requirements at the time of formulation, aiming at maximum profit. The objective of the present study was to compare feeds formulated using linear and non-linear programming in terms of live performance and internal and external egg quality of commercial laying hens. A total of 288 Hisex® White laying hens, 1.540 ± 0.128 g body weight, were evaluated from 33 to 45 weeks of age. Hens were distributed in a completely randomized block design, including six treatments with six...

Probiotics for broiler chickens in Brazil: systematic review and meta-analysis Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Faria Filho,DE; Torres,KAA; Faria,DE; Campos,DMB; Rosa,PS.
This study evaluated the efficacy of probiotic utilization as growth promoters in broiler chicken feeding using systematic literature review and meta-analysis. Thirty-five studies were recovered by the systematic review, 27 of which met the following criteria to be included in the meta-analysis: (1) Brazilian studies published between 1995 and 2005; (2) probiotics administered in the diet without growth promoter; (3) results included performance data with the respective coefficient of variation. Meta-analysis have shown that the probiotics promoted better weight gain and feed conversion than the negative control (no antimicrobial) in the initial phase (1 to 20-28 days); nevertheless, results were similar in the total period (1 to 35-48 days). Weight gain...

Response surface models to predict broiler performance and applications for economic analysis Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Faria Filho,DE; Rosa,PS; Torres,KAA; Macari,M; Furlan,RL.
A study was carried out to elaborate response surface models using broiler performance data recovered from literature in order to predict performance and elaborate economic analyses. Nineteen studies published between 1995 and 2005 were retrieved using the systematic literature review method. Weight gain and feed conversion data were collected from eight studies that fulfilled the pre-established inclusion criteria, and a response surface model was adjusted using crude protein, environmental temperature, and age as independent variables. The models produced for weight gain (r² = 0.93) and feed conversion (r² = 0.85) were accurate, precise, and not biased. Protein levels, environmental temperature and age showed linear and quadratic effects on weight gain...
